Curtailment

Objective

Enable manufacturers to develop and enhance their curtailment capabilities.

Curtailment example from 11:30 am to 01:30 pm :

Context

Curtailment consists in reducing electricity consumption according to external signals. This can be achieved either by curtailing loads or by using internal power sources, such as backup generators. Curtailment is one of the solutions implemented by RTE, in charge of the national electricity network, to balance production and consumption in real time.

Case study

A steel mill has an arc furnace that consumes 30 MW of electricity. During less than 50 hours per year, the plant allows Smart Grid Energy to stop the consumption of the electric arc furnace with a 2 hour notice.
In exchange for this flexibility Smart Grid Energy pays the factory a 500 k€/year premium plus addtional fees during effective curtailment periods.
